Features and Benefits of an Insulin Pump

Safely to better metabolic control

An insulin pump accompanies you around the clock and supplies you with regular insulin or a fast-acting insulin analogue. You must be able to rely on it without feeling like you have surrendered to a “machine”.

Two microprocessors control Accu-Chek insulin pumps. They automatically power the motor every three minutes. A threaded piston rod moves the plunger of the insulin cartridges and releases the insulin via the catheter according to the individually programmed basal rate profile.

In addition, the pump user can:

  • Release an additional bolus from the same cartridge and via the same infusion set at mealtimes and to correct the blood sugar
  • Increase or reduce the basal insulin supply as needed for a certain period of time without having to reprogram the basal rate for every hour,
  • Program / adjust the basal rate himself/herself.

The insulin pump does not measure blood sugar and also does not react automatically to fluctuations in blood sugar. The pump user must handle blood sugar monitoring himself/herself and make any adjustments to the insulin dosage.

Delivery of the Basal Rate using the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump as an Example

The insulin requirement that is not related to the ingestion of food is programmed into the pump as the basal rate and automatically released by the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump every three minutes. Since the basal rates for every hour can be programmed in increments of 0.1 IU, around the clock the body receives precisely the amount of insulin that it requires unrelated to the ingestion of food.

Temporary changes the non-food-related insulin requirement can be made simply by using the function "temporary basal rate decrease or increase". In this case, the programmed basal rate is increased or decreased proportional.

A decrease is often used during physical activity, whereas an increase in the basal rate might be necessary in the case of infections or sickness with fever.

Bolus Delivery with the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump

By pressing a button, the pump user can dispense an additional bolus at mealtimes or to correct high blood sugar levels. Due to the easy operation of the

Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump and the acoustic confirmation (can also be turned off), the selected insulin dose can be dispensed inconspicuously under clothing.

The bolus is preselected in increments of 0.5 IU*, confirmed by the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus insulin pump and quickly dispensed after a few seconds (safety interval for possible correction of the insulin dose).

* Setting can be changed by the pump user.

The insulin is released via an infusion set that is already inserted under the skin – no additional injections are required as a result.

Comprehensive Alarm System for Your Safety

If there should ever be an interruption in the supply of insulin, e.g., because the insulin cartridge or battery is empty or the catheter is occluded, the insulin pump will indicate that there are possible problems by issuing warning or error messages and beeping.

All alarms are clearly indicated and listed on the rear of the insulin pump as shown below on the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus.

The Accu-Chek D-TRONplus is the only insulin pump in the world that has a pressure sensor system. If there is ever excess pressure or low pressure in the insulin cartridge, the Accu-Chek D-TRONplus will indicate that there is a possible catheter occlusion or a leak in cartridge. An additional keylock prevents the pump from being operated unintentionally.
