Coronation Street star Lucy-Jo Hudson has put her support behind the Accu-Chek Teams the UK’s leading support programme for children and young people with diabetes. Her character, Katy Harris, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes earlier this year in part of what continues to be a popular storyline.

Lucy-Jo presented the ward with a Toy Box packed full of goodies which the children dived straight into. She also handed over a cheque to resident Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Louise Hopewell on behalf of Roche Diagnostics.

In preparing for the role Lucy-Jo Hudson found a real affinity for young people with diabetes. The 19 year old told us: "To play the role of Katy, I have had a lot to learn about diabetes and how to manage and live with it. I am constantly impressed with the stories I hear from young people who have been diagnosed at an early age – and have learnt to live a healthy life to the max. I think a young person with diabetes could sometimes feel lonely as not many people understand the needs of their condition. Accu-Chek Teams offers an opportunity to talk to others in a similar position where they can share their experiences and learn from each other."

Having appreciated the concerns of the young with diabetes Lucy-Jo feels that a better understanding of the condition and the challenges facing young people is needed. It's especially difficult for teenagers to keep testing regularly and to best manage their condition. At the time when children most want to be like each other and not to stand out, those with diabetes can feel isolated and different. That's why Lucy-Jo has decided to support the Accu-Chek Teams.

Since 1999 when the Scheme began, the members have shown the most amazing support for each other. Lucy-Jo's support is another helping hand for these remarkable individuals.
