Empower your patients through paired testing

Paired testing is designed to help your patients see changes in their blood glucose before and after a specific meal, exercise, or other event. When used regularly, they can discover how daily life events and choices can impact their blood glucose.

Talk to your patients about how paired testing can help empower them to take control of their health.

What is paired testing?

Paired testing is a structured approach to blood glucose monitoring. It can be used by your patients to analyse meals, activity, stress and other events.

  • Food and drink - how does a certain food or alcohol affect your patient's blood glucose?
  • Exercise - how do certain activities affect your patient?
  • Daily life - if your patient tries to reduce stress, do they notice a difference?

Paired testing involves your patients measuring their blood glucose at specific times — such as before and after meals, or before and after exercise. This gives a pair of blood glucose results. By comparing the two results, your patients can see how things like food and exercise impact their blood glucose.

Your patients should think about simple steps they can take, such as changing serving sizes, having a walk after dinner etc.

Why test in pairs?

It’s one of the most powerful tools you have! Knowledge is power. Paired testing shows patients how their blood glucose responds to things like meals, activity, stress, and more.

This approach encourages curiosity and being actively involved in managing their diabetes. By applying what they learn, they can make healthier choices.

Questions patients may ask you

  1. How long should I wait before checking post-meal/activity blood sugar?
  2. What’s my target blood sugar after eating/exercising?
  3. How often should I do paired testing?
  4. How will my healthcare team use paired testing results?
  5. When can I review results with my healthcare team?

Paired testing using a paper based tool

The Accu-Chek Testing in Pairs paper based tool can be used by your patients to analyse meals, activity, stress and other events.

See below to download our testing in pairs templates.

How it works:
  1. Your patient starts with a simple question and logs their blood glucose results to see what is happening to them.
  2. Each day, they check their blood glucose before the meal or activity, and write the number in the 'Before' column. They then check it again at a specific time after the meal or activity, and write it in the 'After' column.
  3. In the 'Change' column, your patient makes a note the difference in their blood glucose.
