What is structured blood glucose monitoring?

One blood sugar value does not tell you the whole story. However, when you consistently check at specific times, blood glucose patterns can emerge. This can give you a better understanding of how fluctuations in your blood sugar levels are linked to your daily habits.

What is structured monitoring?

Structured monitoring simply involves performing additional blood sugar checks at specific times of day, over a short period of time. This supports you by giving you deeper, more targeted data to work from. It can help you determine if you're in a recommended range and problem-solve around how the things you do are connected to your blood glucose levels.

Structured monitoring tools can help you:

  • Discover how to best use your numbers
  • See how certain activities can affect your blood sugar levels
  • Problem-solve around highs and lows
  • Identify blood sugar patterns
  • Work with your healthcare team to decide if any adjustments are needed to your insulin therapy or other areas of your diabetes management
Here are two different ways to perform structured checking, depending on your goals.

Pattern management

If you find that your HbA1c result is rising in spite of your best efforts, or if you don't feel as well as you'd like, simply record your blood glucose readings, your meal size, and your energy levels before and two hours after breakfast, lunch and dinner, and before bed, for three consecutive days.

After tracking your blood sugar over three days, you and your Healthcare Professional can quickly identify patterns that can guide adjustments to your treatment plan. As a result, you may be able to feel better and lower your HbA1c1

You can track these readings using our mySugr®* app, or, if you prefer a paper option, using the Accu-Chek 360° View tool. Using these tools can help you review all your diabetes data to gain better insight, discover patterns, identify trends and refine your therapy with your Healthcare Professional team.

Paired testing

Also known as before-and-after monitoring, paired testing involves checking your blood sugar levels before and after an event - such as before and after meals or exercising - to give you a pair of blood sugar results. By continually comparing the two results over seven days, you can see how things like food or exercise impact your blood sugar levels.

You can record these readings on your phone using our mySugr app (if you use an Accu-Chek meter, your readings will automatically transfer once you have connected to the app), or on paper with the Accu-Chek paired testing tool. This easy-to-use, printable tool helps you see changes in your blood glucose with before-and-after testing.

Structured blood glucose monitoring can help you organise your numbers so that patterns pop out more easily. Then you can work with your healthcare team to make any needed adjustments in your self-care. Find more information about monitoring your blood glucose here.
